Sub-Zero IW-18 and IW-24 Integrated Wine Columns
A column is a refrigerator that has agreed to disappear. Eighteen or twenty-four inches wide, floor to ceiling, a panel on the front and a finished return on every side. What it asks in exchange is joinery built to the guide, not the eye.

The racks that will not move
Most racks in an IW column come out and go back at any height. Three do not: the top two in the upper compartment and the top one in the lower, or the top two below on a tall model. Each is marked by a small square cut-out in the right rear corner. If a rack refuses to sit where you want it, look for that cut-out before blaming a runner. Magnums need the rack above taken out, and every bottle comes off before a rack is lifted.
Getting to one in a tower
In Century City the column is rarely the difficult part. The service lift, the hours the building allows work and the route from the kerb shape how a visit is arranged, so we settle that on the phone before anyone sets off. A column installed with its returns and filler right will come forward; one boxed hard against a face frame may have to be worked on where it stands.

The two compartments have settled on one reading
An IW column holds two zones at figures you choose. When both arrive at one number whatever the panel says, a probe left in each half and read against the display tells you which has stopped being controlled. Humidity inside gets measured against the room at the same time.

The cabinet is warm and the grille moves no air
The condenser lives behind the grille at the bottom, and the kickplate comes away on two mounting screws. Sub-Zero's use and care guide for these columns asks for that coil every six to twelve months. Clean fins and a cabinet still running warm puts the fan next in line.

The service indicator is flashing with clean fins
Sub-Zero sends you to the condenser first, so the fins get cleared before anything else is considered. An indicator still lit over a clean coil is reporting something measurable, and wants a meter rather than another reset.

The interior lighting has stopped working
Start with the door: on Sub-Zero's wine cabinets a door left standing open can put the lights out on purpose, to stop the cabinet heating itself. Where the door is shut and the interior stays dark, cabinet lighting is one of the few items Sub-Zero keeps inside the manufacturer's own service network.

Can an integrated column be serviced where it stands?
Much of the time, yes. The grille, the kickplate, the control panel and the racks are reachable from the front, and that is where most diagnosis happens. Whether the column can come forward was decided years earlier, by the finished return at each side and the filler behind a face frame.
What is the small square cut-out on the back corner of a rack?
It marks a rack with a fixed position. Sub-Zero uses that cut-out on the top two racks in the upper compartment and the top one in the lower, so anyone reloading a column can see at a glance which racks may be moved and which have to go back exactly where they were.
